The Citadel Layer Brushes set is a three-brush collection in XS, S, and M sizes, designed for the layering and highlight stages of Warhammer miniature painting. Layering applies successive coats of progressively lighter paint to raised surfaces of a model, building from a basecoat through mid-tones to bright edge highlights to create the impression of a three-dimensional light source. The set provides the full range of sizes needed to handle different highlight tasks across different model scales.
The XS brush handles the finest details — eye pupils, small gem highlights, lettering on shoulder pads, and the tightest edge highlights on closely packed character model detail where a larger brush would cover too wide an area. The S brush covers most standard infantry highlighting: armour edges, weapon blades, skin highlights, and cloth fold edges on Warhammer 40,000 Space Marines, Age of Sigmar warriors, and equivalently sized models. The M brush is used for broader highlight work on larger models — character heroes, monsters, and vehicles where the highlight needs to cover more surface area per stroke without losing the defined point that separates a clear highlight from smeared paint. The set covers the full layering workflow from the narrowest detail to the broadest surface highlight.
